Best Things About Sao Miguel

1. Volcanic landscape: The island is covered with hills and mountains that look like they were hand carved.

There are huge ravines throughout the island, but the vegetation is so lush, that you lose all touch with exactly how deep they really are.

2. Volcanic coastline: Craggy black rocks create the shoreline here. Pretty amazing.

3. Cheap buses: For 2,34 € I took a 50 min bus ride along the coast. Quite affordable.

4. Post Offices: The offices are pretty common and easy to find. Even better, though, are the frequent red vending machines on the street that say Correios and dispense clearly labeled stamps.

5. Cleaning: I see at least 2 people a day sweeping or mopping their home or storefront. Whats more, someone is responsible for essentially walking around the city with a huge vacuum cleaner (almost identical to the one on Teletubbies, incidentally).

6. Vegetation: The plants here are plentiful and lush. They are so healthy and green, and seem to cover every spare inch of the ground.

7. Appreciation of Art: Clearly art is valued here, as buildings, parks, walls and sidewalks are all done by hand with an appreciation of the craft, and not just time and money.
